What changed hands?
Michael Jordan Air Jordan 13 Sneakers. Most expensive sneakers ever sold at auction. Smashed previous record of $1.47 million set by Nike Air Ships in 2021.
The sneakers Jordan wore in the Finals
The black and red Air Jordan 13s were worn by Michael Jordan during Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals. The sneakers are photo-matched to the game, providing direct provenance from Jordan's feet to the auction block. Their sale at Sotheby's established a new world record for any sneakers sold at auction.
A new sneaker record
The $2.2 million result smashed the previous sneaker auction record of $1.47 million, set in 2021 by a pair of Nike Air Ships also worn by Jordan. The sale was part of Sotheby's Gamers and Sneakers auction, which paired game-worn sneakers with other sports memorabilia. The result reflects the growing market for game-worn footwear with documented championship provenance.
Read the number carefully
An auction result captures a particular object, a particular sale and the buyers competing on that occasion. It does not establish the value of every similar object, or what this one would sell for today.
Our selection keeps historical results separate from asking prices and estimates. Where the cited report does not break out fees, we say so rather than inventing a hammer price.
