What changed hands?

1966 Ford GT40 Mk II, chassis P/1016. Release states sale on Friday evening during the 24–25 August 2018 auction; 24 August was Friday. Editor’s notes explicitly include buyer’s premium.

The identity behind the racing story

RM Sotheby’s identifies this car as chassis P/1016, part of Ford’s three-car finish at Le Mans in 1966. That racing association belongs to this particular chassis, rather than automatically to every car bearing the GT40 name.

Read the total, not just the badge

The reported $9.795 million includes buyer’s premium. It is therefore a different kind of number from a hammer bid without fees. Our selected Monterey ranking keeps that distinction visible so readers can follow the comparison.

Read the number carefully

An auction result captures a particular object, a particular sale and the buyers competing on that occasion. It does not establish the value of every similar object, or what this one would sell for today.

Our selection keeps historical results separate from asking prices and estimates. Where the cited report does not break out fees, we say so rather than inventing a hammer price.

What does “source reviewed” mean?

We checked the published report against the amount and object listed here. That does not independently authenticate the object or confirm settlement of the transaction.
