What changed hands?
Raincoat Pikachu Pokémon Card. Winning bid $7M + 20% premium = $8.4M. 64 bids. PSA 10 grade. Only 100 copies made.
100 copies, one perfect grade
The Raincoat Pikachu card was produced as part of the Pokémon Art Academy promotion. Only 100 copies were made, and this example was graded PSA 10 — the highest possible grade. The combination of extreme scarcity and perfect condition is what drove the bidding to $8.4 million at Fanatics Collect, making it the second most expensive Pokémon card ever sold.
Second most expensive Pokémon card ever
The $8.4 million total comprised a $7 million winning bid plus a 20% buyer's premium. Sixty-four bids were placed before the hammer fell. The result trails only the Pikachu Illustrator card, which sold for $5.275 million in 2021 and was later re-sold privately. The Raincoat Pikachu's scarcity — 100 copies versus 39 for the Illustrator — did not prevent it from commanding a higher price at auction.
Read the number carefully
An auction result captures a particular object, a particular sale and the buyers competing on that occasion. It does not establish the value of every similar object, or what this one would sell for today.
Our selection keeps historical results separate from asking prices and estimates. Where the cited report does not break out fees, we say so rather than inventing a hammer price.
