The Smithsonian describes its ruby slippers as an anonymous donation received in 1979. It identifies the recovered pair as the mismatched twins of its own shoes. That distinction matters: an auction price for one pair cannot simply be attached to another museum’s object. A recognizable name is only the beginning of identifying what was sold.
